Project Background

The Tampa Bay Water Authority approached DEPCO with a critical challenge: their aging pump infrastructure was causing significant operational inefficiencies and increasing maintenance costs. The facility, serving over 500,000 residents, required a comprehensive upgrade to meet growing demand while reducing energy consumption.

With a 50 million gallon per day capacity requirement and strict regulatory compliance standards, the project demanded careful engineering analysis and a phased implementation approach to maintain continuous service.

Engineering Challenge

The primary challenges included:

  • Maintaining continuous water supply during the upgrade process
  • Integration with existing SCADA systems and control infrastructure
  • Meeting strict efficiency targets while reducing operational costs
  • Ensuring regulatory compliance throughout the transition

Technical Solution

DEPCO engineering team designed a comprehensive solution featuring KSB high-efficiency vertical turbine pumps with variable frequency drives. The system was implemented in three phases to maintain continuous operation.

Primary Pumps

6x KSB Omega 500-650A vertical turbine pumps with VFD control

Control System

Allen-Bradley PLC integration with existing SCADA

Flow Capacity

50 MGD total capacity with N+1 redundancy

Efficiency Gain

35% reduction in energy consumption

Final Results

The project was completed on schedule and within budget, delivering exceptional results that exceeded client expectations:
